Nukwase Tembo

Nukwase Tembo is a Zambian artist based in Lusaka who challenges toxic societal norms and explores the complexities of blackness and women's rights in post-colonial Africa. With a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, she creates mixed media oil paintings and collages that normalize blackness, de-objectify women's bodies, and question how borrowed Western ideals have become rigid cultural standards in fluid African societies. Her work incorporates fabric and recyclable materials to examine what it means to be black and female in contexts where women of color have historically been denied ownership of their own bodies.
